WHO CAN ADOPT?
People of all ages, races, and beliefs are eligible to become adoptive parents. There is no marital, educational, or financial prerequisite that must be met for consideration.
STEPS TO ADOPTION
The steps toward adoption vary from state to state. Florida law requires that certain legal and procedural requirements be met in order for an adoption to take place. Families wishing to adopt must complete the following steps:
Step One
Attend an orientation session conducted by Community Based Care of Brevard.
This meeting provides an opportunity for families to ask questions, gather needed information, and determine if adoption is right for them.
Step Two
Enroll in a ten week course of Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting (MAPP). This 30 hour course provides prospective parents with the State-required curriculum and certification to become adoptive parents.
Step Three
Undergo a thorough criminal background check.
Step Four Complete a home-study evaluation. This assessment includes a review of everything from finances to relationship dynamics. Families must fully participate in this process as it allows the professionals working with them to best determine which child or children will be the best match for their family.
Step Five
Once all the required steps are completed, the Adoption Recruiters begin the process of matching children with families.
Step Six
Engage in placement supervision. After a child is placed in a home, a counselor must make regular visits to assess the child’s adjustment and to determine if any additional support is needed. The supervision period ends after 90 days.
Step Seven
At a special finalization hearing before a judge, families are legally united. |
